The UN First Committee Adopts Nuclear Disarmament Resolution

After the European Parliament voted to adopt a reoslution calling for an international nuclear weapons ban agreement, the UN First Committee adopted to launch that process.

The UN reoslution sets out to convene a conference in 2017 to negotiate an international “legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination”. The reoslution was adopted with123 nations voting in favour of the resolution, 38 against and 16 abstaining. 

Civil society organisations including the International Campaign for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) weclomed the reoslution's adoption.
