Review of the Bologna Process for Higher Education

We need to strengthen higher education engagement in Europe and beyond in pursuit of knowledge-based societies", say Labour MEPs

Together with their Socialist & Democrat colleagues, Labour MEPs yesterday (28 April) adopted a key report on the implementation and review of the Bologna Process which aims to ensure comparability in the standards and quality of higher education qualifications across 47 countries.

Over the past 15 years, the Bologna Process has accomplished a great deal in terms of the quality of education, mobility, and academic recognition. Overall, the Bologna Process has achieved greater transparency and made information about European higher education easily accessible, benchmarking national performance against common objectives.


Whilst these accomplishments are commendable, the report recognises that some areas still need further development. It is crucial to revitalise the Bologna Process in order to meet new challenges as well as ensuring the quality and transparency of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

Julie Ward MEP, Labour European spokesperson on culture and education, said:

"I welcome the adoption of this key, high quality and comprehensive report as I believe it is crucial with regards to the EU goals of sustainable growth and knowledge-based societies. Essentially it is about investing in quality education and learning, something that will affect the students of the future."

With this report, Labour MEPs have reaffirmed their commitment to the Bologna Process, whereby the European system of higher education is understandable, accessible and credible, supporting cross-border mobility and internationalisation, while respecting the diversity and autonomy of individual countries and universities.
