The Ukrainian pilot, Nadya Savchenko, held hostage in Russia since 2014 has finally been released in a prisoner swap with Russian authorities. This leaves another 27 Ukrainian prisoners unlawfully detained in Russia.

The release follows months of intensive international pressure calling for Savchenko’s release, as well as increasing concerns for her well-being over prolonged hunger-strikes.

Julie and fellow MEPs joined the calls for Savchenko’s release, as well as a demand for all Ukrainians unlawfully detained in Russia to be released unconditionally. Julie has written to Russian authorities urging them to treat these Ukrainian detainees humanely, and calling for their release. Julie and her colleagues are committed to continuing to work for the release of the 27 remaining Ukrainian prisoners.
