My newest member of the team!

Last weekend I managed to do something I'd been meaning to do for a long time - sponsor a dog! As  I travel so much between Brussels, Strasbourg and the North West, it's impossible for me to keep a dog of my own. But as a life-long dog lover and knowing all the good that the EU does for dogs, I still wanted to share a link with (wo)man's best friend.

I'm a big supporter of the Dogs Trust, having visited the rehoming centre in Manchester last summer, but this was my first visit to the Merseyside Centre in Huyton where I instantly took a shine to a greyhound called Kara, who I decided to sponsor there and then.

Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and has a network of 20 rehoming centres across the UK and one in Ireland, which care for nearly 17,000 dogs every year. Dogs Trust will never put a healthy dog to sleep and is working towards the day when all dogs can enjoy a happy life, free from the threat of unnecessary destruction.

I'm astounded by the amazing work of all the Dogs Trust teams and the strides they have made in key dog welfare issues, such as microchipping. This will become a legal requirement of every dog owner in England on 6th April, under plans intended to cut a rise in strays.

This matches the work that the EU are doing to protect pets. in 2013 it introduced pet passports to prevent illegal dog breeding and pedigree puppy smuggling, and to help you find your dog if it goes missing. EU countries are also now required to inspect pets crossing borders to reduce the risk of rabies.

Jake Flatman, Dogs Trust Merseyside Rehoming Centre Assistant Manager said:

“It was lovely to meet Julie and introduce her to lots of four-legged friends. We were delighted that Julie has chosen to sponsor Kara through our Sponsor Dog programme. We made certain Julie enjoyed lots of canine cuddles and the dogs were particularly delighted to gobble all the treats she’d brought with her!”

If you would like to sponsor a dog, don't hesitate to go to and see all the dogs that are in need of your help!
