It’s excellent to see this comprehensive report on transparency and accountability in the EU institutions. If we expect to represent our constituents properly in a democratic EU we need to make sure our constituents can see what we are doing and know we have their best interest at heart.
When former commissioner Barroso announced his job with a big bank last year, i joined many colleagues to call for the commissions rules on conflict of interests to be tightened and I’m glad to see that demand being made once again in this report. That should accompany greater transparency in this house too, including an effective mandatary transparency register. There is more work to do, but at least we can demonstrate that we will keep on pushing forwards for a more ethical politics.
