In an interview given to Euroactiv following the Brussels attacks and the setting up of a European team of national experts on counterterrorism by the European Council, the President of the group of Socialists & Democrats in the European Parliament, Italian MEP Gianni Pittella, stressed that from this tragedy, as from the migration crisis, Europe must turn into a more political Union, capable to face global threat and invest in culture and development.
Pittella reaffirmed the need to eradicate both marginalisation and socio-economic injustices, which are the roots of hatred and violence. As S&D Group leader, he also urged European leaders to forge an integrated strategy to improve security but also to invest in culture, integration and development of the less-well off areas.
This important statement proves to be in line with the recommendations promoted in a report that Julie authored, adopted by the European Parliament last January on 'the role of intercultural dialogue, cultural diversity and education in promoting EU fundamental values'.
